Des Moines East High School to host Jazz event.
Jazz saxophonist and educator Jack Wilkins will be the guest artist in the second of a series of Jazz workshops and concerts presented by Synergy Jazz Foundation. The workshop runs February 28 through March 2.
Two improvisation workshops are open to the public beginning at 9:00 am Saturday followed by a lunch conference where participating educators can quiz Wilkins about his approach to teaching Jazz. The afternoon session involves Wilkins working with the East High Jazz Band. An evening concert features Wilkins with local Jazz icons Sam Salomone, Rob Messer, and Dave Altemeier plus a special appearance by the East High School Jazz Band. The concert begins at 7:30 PM at the State Historical Building Auditorium. Tickets are $10 adults-$5 students and are on sale at Rieman Music and from any East High Jazz Band member or director. Sunday there will be an 11:00 am workshop on how to learn tunes, followed by lunch with Jack and the East Jazz Band. Wilkins will also appear at the Community Jazz Center student jam session at Java Joe's, Sunday 2-4 PM. On Monday Wilkins will work with high school and middle school students at East High, followed by an appearance with the Des Moiones Big Band, 6:30 PM at The Adventureland Inn, Altoona. Also appearing will be the East Jazz Band.
